European Commission admits green hydrogen strategy needs to be accelerated

The European Commission acknowledged on Wednesday that the transition to renewable hydrogen in the European Union (EU) must be accelerated and requires new funding, in response to a review by the European Court of Auditors (ECA).

Having adopted a comprehensive legal framework for the energy transition, Brussels must now “accelerate the deployment and deployment of renewable low-carbon hydrogen in Europe and further develop this emerging market,” according to a spokesman for the Community’s executive.

The same source also added that “to ensure the necessary global level of investment, this must be complemented by financing from the private sector and national authorities.”

In a special report, “EU Industrial Policy on Renewable Hydrogen,” published this Wednesday, TCE believes that the EU must not meet the targets it has set for the production and import of renewable hydrogen by 2030 and must now define a strategic path on which to move towards decarbonization.

On a positive note, the auditors note that four years after the European Commission published a strategy for renewable hydrogen – as part of the bloc’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 – “the legal framework for renewable hydrogen is almost complete.”
