In a message posted on social media, Angola’s chief executive expressed wishes for a speedy recovery to those receiving medical care and assured that authorities “will continue to give full attention to the victims of the unfortunate road accident that has claimed the lives of many families.”
An updated report from the Interior Ministry said the accident, which occurred in the city of Kuito in Bié province on a bridge over the Kuito River connecting the districts of Cangote and Kamalaya, left at least 13 people dead and 36 injured.
Seven people died at the scene, the rest at Dr. Walter Strangway Hospital, where the wounded were taken.
The accident occurred when a three-wheeled motorcycle (kaleluya), carrying eight passengers, crashed and overturned while allegedly speeding.
The population rushed to the scene to help the victims, but soon after, the car that was pulling another, using a broken cable, broke loose and continued to rush at high speed, knocking down several people at the scene.
