Trump hailed as hero at Republican convention

Donald Trump was hailed as a hero on Monday night at the start of the Republican National Convention, two days after he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt.

The Republican nominee made a triumphant entrance at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, where thousands of cheering delegates pumped their fists in the air and shouted “Fight! Fight!” in imitation of Trump’s initial reaction to the attack he suffered last Saturday in Pennsylvania. Many couldn’t hide their tears as the former president, wearing a huge bandage over his right ear, slowly made his way through the room. Always flanked by security guards who formed a protective perimeter around him, Trump later joined some family members and his running mate, J.D. Vance, in a box to watch the first day of hearings on the economy, which included testimony from six “everyday Americans” about the hardships of inflation.

Trump will not speak until after the convention, Thursday night, to accept the party’s nomination for the White House, promising to deliver a speech to “unite America and the world” in the wake of the attack that targeted him.

On Monday night, Sen. Tim Scott, Trump’s former Republican primary opponent, summed up the crowd’s sentiment by attributing the candidate’s survival to divine intervention. “Our God still saves. Because on Saturday, the Devil came to Pennsylvania with a shotgun in his hand, but the American lion stood up and roared,” he said.

Biden admits mistake in controversial phrase
Joe Biden acknowledged that it was “a mistake” to call on Democrats to put Trump “in the crosshairs” days before attacking his rival. “My point was we should focus on him,” he said, citing Trump’s frequent use of “inflammatory rhetoric.”

Musk promises 45 million a month
Billionaire Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, announced on Tuesday that he would donate $45 million (€41.2 million) a month to Trump’s campaign until the presidential election in November. On Saturday, shortly after the attack, the businessman said he would support Trump in the election.

Details
The FBI doesn’t know the motive.
After thoroughly examining shooter Thomas Crooks’ cellphone and computer and interviewing dozens of family members and acquaintances, the FBI said it had found nothing so far.

Preparation sets up shooting and buys ammo
According to CNN, the day before the attack, Crooks tested a scope at a gun club and on the day of the attack, he bought 50 bullets and a ladder to climb onto the roof.

Iran wanted to kill Trump
The US received information weeks ago about an alleged Iranian plot to assassinate Trump. However, there is currently no evidence of any connection to last Saturday’s attack.
