Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in a letter sent to European leaders that former US President Donald Trump is willing to work as a “peace broker” in Ukraine if he is re-elected in November and has a “detailed and well-founded” plan to end the conflict.
In a letter sent to European Council President Charles Michel and circulated to other European leaders, Orban stresses that if Trump wins the November election, “the burden of financial support for Ukraine will shift significantly to the disadvantage of the EU,” proposing to “discuss whether continuing the current policy is rational.” The Hungarian leader, who angered Brussels by meeting Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping on a supposed “peace mission” and who met Trump last week, also argues that the European Union “must reopen direct diplomatic lines of communication with Russia” to discuss peace in Ukraine.
Orban’s letter threatens to further deepen the rift between Hungary and the rest of the EU, after Brussels warned that despite Hungary holding the rotating EU presidency, it has no mandate to speak on behalf of the 27 countries. European Commission members will attend meetings in Budapest under Hungary’s presidency, while several member states have also announced they will not send ministers to informal meetings in the country.
