The left-wing New Popular Front (NPF) coalition, which is locked in difficult negotiations to form a government, reached an agreement on Wednesday to present a joint candidate for National Assembly president, veteran communist Andre Chassagne, on Thursday.
Chassin, 74, is the name agreed upon by Unbowed France (LFI), the Socialist Party (PS), the environmentalists and the French Communist Party (PCF) to fight for the fourth highest post of the French state and who will be elected on Thursday at the opening of parliamentary work.
An MP since 2002, the politician from Puy-de-Dôme must count on 190 votes from MPs from the parties that make up the FN and partners, which is more than the votes expected to be won by President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance.
