Livre’s sole deputy, Ruy Tavares, defended “an end to impunity, cover-ups and abuses” in the Catholic Church on Monday, saying that everything must be done to ensure that no one else is in a similar situation.
“We cannot let down those who should have been traumatized and we must make sure no one else has to go through what they went through. End impunity, end cover-ups and end abuses. mission,” wrote MP Free in his account on the social network “Twitter”.
According to the historian and parliamentarian Livre, “today more than ever, reading the report of an independent commission to study child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, the courage of people who reported what they should never have passed.”
Later, in a statement to the press, Livre argues that “the Catholic Church urgently needs to take decisive, concrete and swift action after decades of a culture of silence and connivance in these situations.”
“She must immediately provide psychological support to all victims, reimburse them when they require it, forward all complaints on which criminal proceedings have been initiated to the State Ministry, and deprive all identified rapists of the possibility of contact with minors. The state has a role to play in the investigation, throughout the trial and in preventing situations like this,” they add.
Livre follows “the recommendations of an independent commission to extend the statute of limitations for this type of crime, allowing victims, even in adulthood, to make the decision to report and prosecute their abusers.”
The Independent Commission on Child Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church has received 512 confirmed testimonies concerning 4,815 victims since it began operations in January 2022, coordinator Pedro Strecht said on Monday, who also cited what the commission sent to the State Ministry 25 cases.
The President of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference (CEP) said on Monday that the report of the Independent Commission for the Study of Sexual Abuse in the Church “expresses the harsh and tragic reality that there have been and are victims of sexual abuse instigated by clerics.”
“We ask for forgiveness from all the victims: those who courageously testified, kept silent for so many years, and those who still live with their pain in the depths of their souls, not sharing it with anyone,” he added.
