In a daring daylight robbery, criminals stole about 100 firearms from a shooting club in the city of Itaiópolis in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. The criminals entered the club in the Santo António neighborhood with their faces already covered and, before leaving, arrested everyone inside, the owner’s wife, and the masons who were doing the work inside the safe room where the weapons were stored.
It was the owner of the shooting club, riding his motorcycle on the outskirts of Itaiópolis, a generally peaceful city of 22,000, who noticed suspicious activity in the establishment through his cell phone, which was connected to CCTV cameras, and turned back. When he got to the club, he noticed a robbery and called the police, who freed the people locked in.
According to the initial search, the thieves took at least 98 firearms, including 10 long guns, including shotguns and a military rifle, and 88 handguns, including revolvers and pistols of various calibers. In addition to these and possibly other weapons, the inventory of which is still being processed, the criminals stole at least 10,000 rounds of ammunition, taking it all during their getaway in the club owner’s wife’s car, a Jeep Renegade Sport, which was found abandoned in the bushes outside the city a few hours later.
The businessman’s wife said the criminals arrived shortly after she opened the establishment that morning for construction workers to enter. Three thieves appeared hooded and armed, turned everyone in and began loading the club’s weapons and boxes of ammunition for Renegade.
