Two men and a woman were killed in a violent head-on collision between two motorcycles that occurred on Friday afternoon, around 5:45 p.m., on the access road to Praia de Faro, about a kilometer from where the International Motorcycle Meeting is taking place. The deceased were the riders of the motorcycles, aged 31 and 49, and the woman, aged 28, who was still hanging. The couple are from Coryuz, the other victim is from Coimbra. According to authorities, the cause of the accident was an unsafe maneuver on a bend.
“The cause of the accident was an unsuccessful overtaking maneuver by one of the drivers, who collided with another motorcycle traveling in the opposite direction,” he said. CM Major Paulo Anjos of the Faro GNR Road Squad. The woman was also given life support: she was taken, on a ventilator, in a very serious condition by INEM staff to the Faro hospital. However, he could not cope with the severity of his injuries and eventually died. As Paulo Anjos explained, “judging by their clothes, the victims were regulars at motorcycle gatherings.”
The road was closed for about two hours. Authorities are asking motorcyclists to be careful, but the tragedy has cast a shadow over the party. “These events are much busier and people have to go slower. I warn against drinking alcohol, which is even more likely to cause accidents on two-wheelers, and against performing dangerous maneuvers,” said Paulo Anjos.
