The son of a Russian governor was arrested at Milan’s Malpensa Airport on Monday after the US issued a warrant accusing him and four other Russians of money laundering and sanctions evasion.
Artem Uss, the son of the governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory Alexander Uss, has been charged on political grounds, his father said on Telegram.
“The supply of petroleum products, public equipment and utility vehicles, freely sold and purchased around the world, has suddenly been declared illegal by the US authorities,” the Governor said. “And why? Only because it is done for the good of Russia. The political implications of these accusations are clear.”
The Milan Court of Appeal on Thursday upheld the order and set a date for Friday when Uss will tell the court whether he agrees to extradition. If he objects to the warrant, it will take several weeks for the extradition process to be completed.
However, his lawyers may request house arrest instead of jail, court sources say. Lawyer Vinicio Nardo met with the USS at the jail on Wednesday.
