Lisbon with 84 victims, Braga with 54 victims and Porto with 42 dioceses, where the largest number of victims of abuse reported their cases to the Independent Commission for the Study of Child Abuse in the Catholic Church.
Leiria Fatima, with 23 cases of abuse, Setúbal, with 19, Coimbra, with 16 and Guarda, with 13, follows immediately after that commission’s report, released on Monday.
The Diocese of the Armed and Security Forces (Ordinariato Castrense) has only one case recorded in the table in the report of the commission, headed by child psychiatrist Pedro Strecht.
As for the Religious Institutes, among women, the most affected were the Sisters of Our Lady of Fatima with eight victims and the Religious Organizations of the Love of God with three victims.
As for men, the Salesians stand out with 18 victims, followed by the Jesuits (12) and the Franciscans – the Order of Friars Minor (11).
Obra da Rua, commonly referred to as Obra do Padre Américo, appears in the report with seven reports of abuse, while Corpo Nacional de Escutas has 11 and Prelature Opus Dei has five.
According to the report, the cases identified in Scouts are also included in the totals for the respective dioceses.
The Independent Commission for the Study of Sexual Harassment in the Catholic Church of Portugal began collecting victim testimony on January 11, 2022, confirming 512 complaints out of 564 received, extrapolating the existence of a minimum number of 4,815 victims over the past 72 years.
The Portuguese Bishops’ Conference will take its position on the nearly 500-page report at a plenary assembly scheduled for March 3 in Fatima.
