A British Army soldier, aged in his 40s, was seriously injured in a stabbing near Brompton Barracks, home of 1st Regiment, Royal School of Military Engineers.
The suspect was arrested minutes after the crime was committed. The suspect is a 24-year-old man who was allegedly filming a “mental illness episode”. Several knives were found after the attack on the soldier, Sky News reports.
The soldier was in uniform when he was attacked. “Our thoughts are with the serviceman, his family and our armed forces community who serve to keep us safe,” wrote Keir Starmer, the UK prime minister.
A woman who lived near the crime scene said she was sitting at dinner with her family when she heard a loud scream.
Approaching the window, he said he saw the attacker stab the man lying on the ground for the last time and then escape on a bicycle.
The British Army condemned the attack: “We will continue to work closely with Kent Police to understand what happened and support their investigation,” a spokesman said.
