US President Joe Biden signed into law a bill Thursday that would strengthen oversight of the federal prison agency after an Associated Press report exposed systemic corruption and abuse in the prison system.
The federal prison oversight law, approved by the Senate on July 10 and the House in May, creates an independent ombudsman who would respond to and investigate complaints related to allegations of sexual abuse and other criminal conduct committed by prison staff, chronic understaffing, escapes and high-profile deaths.
The new law also requires the Justice Department’s inspector general to conduct risk-based inspections of all 122 federal correctional institutions, make recommendations for correcting deficiencies and assign each facility a risk rating.
