Portuguese tennis player Francisco Cabral has been called up at the last minute to the singles table of the 2024 Olympic tennis games in Paris this Sunday to replace the withdrawn Australian Alex de Minaur.
A doubles specialist, Cabral is unranked in singles and will face Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, world No. 34, in their second meeting on Court 7 at Roland Garros after De Minaur, No. 6, withdrew.
The Porto native, ranked 862nd as his best position in the singles hierarchy, has not played singles since March 2022, when he lost in the first qualifying round to a challenger from Oeiras.
Later this Sunday, in the sixth meeting on Court 14, Cabral will join his compatriot Nuno Borges to face Greece’s Petros and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round of the doubles.
Before that, in the third match of Field 13, Nuno Borges, No. 42 in the world, will face Argentina’s Mariano Navone, No. 36, in a first-round singles match that was postponed on Saturday due to rain.
