A directive encouraging the repair of goods comes into force on Tuesday in the European Union (EU), with member states having until July 31, 2026, to transpose the new rules into national law.
The directive (European law) means that manufacturers of certain products, such as refrigerators or “smartphones”, are required to offer consumers timely repair services at a reasonable price and provide spare parts at a reasonable price, the statement said.
A European repair platform will also be created where consumers can easily find repairers.
The new directive also gives consumers a new right to a one-year extension of their legal warranty if they choose to have their defective product repaired rather than replaced.
The Repair of Goods Directive aims to promote more sustainable consumption by making it easier and more rewarding to repair products.
