Famine in camps for displaced people in Darfur due to the war that has raged in Sudan for more than a year is spiraling out of control and could become the deadliest in the world, US officials warned on Friday.
The United States Agency for International Development, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and other independent and government humanitarian organizations have stepped up calls for a ceasefire and access to aid across Sudan.
The call came after international experts from the Famine Review Committee formally confirmed on Thursday that hunger was in its worst form in at least one of three temporary camps for displaced people, which are home to some 600,000 people.
