The UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon on Saturday condemned the “complete lack of accountability” for the August 4, 2020 explosion in Beirut that killed more than 200 people and for which the investigation has been suspended.
“The complete lack of accountability for this man-made disaster is frankly appalling,” UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plaschere said in a statement released on the eve of the fourth anniversary of the tragedy, which she also said left more than 6,500 people injured and parts of Beirut devastated.
Janine Hennis-Plascher noted that “one would expect the competent authorities to work tirelessly to remove all political and structural barriers” to the investigation, but she warns and condemns that “the opposite is happening.”
