Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday and left the country.
Hasina’s decision came after the worst unrest in the Asian country, which has already left many people dead. The politician fled the country by helicopter to India, the newspaper reported CNN News 18.
The army chief said a new interim government would be formed.
Local television footage showed thousands of people celebrating in the streets, and the prime minister’s official residence was also surrounded by celebrating protesters.
Around 100 people have died as a result of student protests against civil service quotas. The local government has even imposed a mandatory curfew and cut off access to the internet.
