Guilherme Souza de Assis, 13, was shot dead on Sunday in Morro dos Macacos, a favela located in the Vila Isabel neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, while celebrating his birthday.
The boy, who was involved in a social project in the Vila Isabel community, dreamed of becoming a footballer, and his birthday party was dedicated to Argentine player Lionel Messi.
Guilherme belonged to the Macacos Vive club and was described as ““One of the most diligent students, a child’s love, devoted to school, to other children, always active in all his activities, very obedient,” he told the newspaper. globeVitor Bernardo, lawyer and one of the creators of Macacos Vive.
In a video from the project, a 13-year-old boy said: “My name is Guilherme, I’m 13 years old, the team is very important to me. I study a lot to play football. I study, I’ll go to the front without knowing anything.”
This Monday, Guilherme was honored by friends and founders of the project.
The same shootout also killed 20-year-old Luis Gabriel Costa de Jesus, who worked as a courier and was returning home when he was shot. The 13-year-old boy’s mother was also wounded in the leg and hospitalized.
According to the military police, the Macacos Police (UPP) team was called, but when they arrived at the scene, the shooter had already fled.
Morro dos Macacos has been the site of constant shootings since the beginning of the year, linked to rivalries between violent groups from different areas.
