Carnival brings rain, temperatures up to 24 degrees and dust from North Africa

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) predicts showers, maximum temperatures of 17 to 24 degrees and dust from North Africa from this Friday until Carnival Tuesday.

Until Tuesday, mainland Portugal will be dominated by a depression centered southwest of the Iberian Peninsula, according to IPMA.

Due to the depression, airborne dust is expected to be transported over the continent from North Africa, which should be low but may rise temporarily between the late afternoon on Saturday and Sunday.

Cloudiness is also expected to increase from this Friday, with a chance of rain in the Algarve later in the day.

On Saturday, the rains will pass in the southern region, and from noon it may spread to the central region. Showers will be light and infrequent on Sunday, intensifying again on Monday and Tuesday, and may also pass these days in the northern region.

“There is some uncertainty associated with this meteorological situation, mainly due to the position of the aforementioned depression. It should be noted that the shower pattern suggests intermittent and scattered precipitation both in space and in time,” the IPMA said in a statement.

As for temperatures, IPMA indicates that they will experience slight fluctuations with minimums of 08 to 13 degrees Celsius on the coast and 06 to 09 degrees on land, and slightly lower, from 03 to 6ºC, in the interior of the North. and Beira Hai.

Maximum temperatures will be higher than normal for this time of year, between 17 and 24 degrees across much of the mainland.

Winds will be light to moderate, moderate to strong in the Algarve on Saturday and in the highlands, especially in the central and southern regions.

IPMA also predicts sea waves: waves from the southeast on the southern coast of the Algarve from 1 to 2 meters, and this Friday and Saturday – from 2 to 2.5 meters.

Cloudy and rainy periods are expected for the Madeira archipelago, especially on the northern slopes and in the highlands.

On Monday and Tuesday, the chance of precipitation decreases, and showers, if any, are generally weak.

Moderate to strong winds are also expected, with maximum temperatures between 16 and 22 degrees.

In the Azores, cloudy weather is expected from this Friday to Monday, but on all islands it will alternate with clearings, significant precipitation is not expected.

On Carnival Tuesday, “the approach and passage of a cold frontal surface with roughness, with slow movement and moderate activity” will affect the weather on all the islands, starting with the islands of the Western Group and gradually spreading to the rest of the Archipelago.

Thus, cloudiness is expected to increase with periods of light rains turning into light showers, and only on the islands of Fores and Corvo a slight increase in wind.

The maximum temperature will vary from 15ºC to 17ºC.
