Vacancies for doctors, train tickets for 20 euros and extra payments for pensioners: Montenegro’s promises

Prime Minister Luis Montenegro announced this Wednesday three measures that will affect health, transport and pensions, which will be implemented in the near future. During the speech that marked his return to political life, at the Festa do Pontal, the Social Democrat ensured that he was “not distracted” and that he was focused on ““to take a strategic approach to the future of Portugal.”

Montenegro said the government would open 1,684 places for medical students as 1,500 doctors retire in the next three years.

Regarding travel and transport, the head of the executive mentioned the creation of a rail pass that, for 20 euros per month, would allow travel on urban, regional and intercity trains.

The latest measure announced was the provision of an emergency supplement of between 100 and 200 euros to pensioners receiving up to 1,527.78 euros.

“In October next year, we will allocate and pay an extraordinary supplement to pensioners with lower pensions: it will be 200 euros for those with a pension before IFRS (509.26 euros); from 509.26 euros to 1018.52 cents it will be 150 euros; and whoever has an assessment from 1018.62 euros to 1527.78 euros will be charged a supplement of 100 euros,” he explained.

The Social Democrat used the speech to talk about the government’s work on the National Health Service. that the commitment was being “fulfilled”, rejecting criticism of the government over the chaos caused by the closure of some emergency services. The Social Democrat stressed that women’s health, including gynaecological and obstetric services, was a priority for the SNS.

The PSD leader also praised the “openness” and “integration” attitude shown towards the parties and the Portuguese people. He was pleased with everything that had been achieved in the four months of the new leader’s work, such as the agreements reached with teachers, police, judicial officials and other specialists. “We are strategically engaged in the future of Portugal,” he stressed.

Montenegro guaranteed that the government was “open to all, to take care of the life of every Portuguese” and that it was focused on “building a fairer society.”
