Climate activists from the organisation “Generation Letzte” or “Last Generation” entered several German airports on Thursday, in some cases sticking to the surface of the runways, causing disruption to the normal functioning of these airport infrastructures.
According to local media, citing police sources, activists invaded the airports of Berlin (east), Stuttgart and Karlsruhe (southwest), Cologne-Bonn (west) and Nuremberg (south), which in some cases provoked the suspension of “flight operations”.
In Berlin, authorities at Cologne and Nuremberg airports decided to suspend air traffic after activists invaded the airports at 03:00 local time (04:00 Lisbon), public radio Deutschlandfunk reported.
Shortly after the authorities intervened, air traffic at Cologne airport resumed, albeit with delays, private television channel NTV reported.
In a statement seen by the Efe news agency, the “Letzte Generation” called for protests at airports in Berlin, Cologne, Nuremberg, Stuttgart and “other airports in North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg” calling, among other things, for the abandonment of fossil fuels.
Thursday’s actions come three weeks after climate change activists stormed Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s largest, leading to the cancellation of 230 flights and the launch of an investigation into crimes of coercion, property damage and trespass.
