Ukrainian troops have captured the town of Sudzha in the Kursk region. Ukraine’s president confirmed Thursday that the town had been “successfully liberated from Russian troops” and that a military command was being established there. “I thank all the soldiers who made this possible,” Zelensky said.
However, the Ukrainian press published a video showing soldiers removing Russian flags from an administrative building and shouting greetings to Ukraine. Kyiv guarantees that it already controls 82 settlements in the Kursk region and an area of 1,150 square kilometers.
According to the Ukrainian Armed Forces commander, the troops are continuing to advance, and are already 35 kilometers (22 miles) into Russian territory. Meanwhile, Ukrainian intelligence reports that it has captured 102 Russian soldiers. Zelensky says these soldiers could eventually be exchanged for Ukrainian prisoners of war. As the invasion progresses, some 200,000 people have already fled their homes in regions bordering Russia.
Russia announced Thursday that it was sending additional forces to the Belgorod region, which has also been the target of attacks by Kyiv forces.
