Argentina’s former president Alberto Fernandez has been formally charged by the Justice Ministry with domestic violence crimes against his ex-wife, former first lady Fabiola Yáñez. Fernandez, 65, denies the charges.
“I am being accused of something I did not do. I did not hit Fabiola. I have never hit a woman,” he told the Spanish newspaper El País.
Fabiola Yáñez, 43, testified at a virtual hearing at the Argentine consulate in Madrid, where she currently lives with their two-year-old son. Yáñez reported episodes of extreme violence and a “hellish” marriage, even accusing her ex-husband of forcing her to have an abortion. “He knew I was pregnant and he still kicked me in the stomach,” Yáñez told Alberto Fernández’s former secretary.
Argentina’s former first lady also claimed that she was subjected to “telephone harassment and psychological terrorism” by the former president and that she was not given help, even though “many people,” including the president’s doctor, knew that he was covering up the attacks.
The case shocked Argentina when news portal Infobae published photos of Yáñez with marks on his hand and face, as well as conversations in which the former president figured. An Argentine judge ordered his defense in Spain to be strengthened and banned Fernández from leaving Argentina.
