The municipality of Câmara de Lobos in Madeira, affected by a fire that started on Wednesday in the neighboring municipality of Ribeira Brava, has decided to activate the Municipal Emergency Action Plan this Saturday, the president of the municipality announced.
Speaking to Lusa, Leonel Silva stressed that the decision was taken given the rapid development of the fire, which began on Wednesday in Ribeira Brava and spread to Camara de Lobos during the night of the following day, as well as forecasts for continued wind and heat in the coming days.
“I consider it important to activate the Municipal Emergency Plan and convene the Municipal Civil Defense Commission to summarize the progress of work on the ground and to take measures to prepare for the next hours and days so that we can properly organize the resources involved to meet the needs of the population,” he emphasized.
The mayor also said that on Saturday afternoon it was decided to evacuate the area of Fajã das Galinhas in the parish of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, from where about 60 people were evacuated. Most of them will be received in the homes of relatives and friends, 10 will be placed in a municipal facility, and four will be placed in a medical facility due to health problems.
Early this Saturday morning, around 50 families, totaling more than 100 people, were also evicted from the areas of Cira Velha and Terra Chan in the parish of Curral das Freiras, without having yet met the conditions for returning to their homes.
Some will stay with family or friends, while others will be housed in municipal facilities and also in the parish gym, the mayor said.
According to a report by the regional Minister of Health and Civil Protection, Pedro Ramos, at 13:00 the fire broke out in Encumeada (Ribeira Brava), as well as in the parishes of Curral das Freiras and Jardim da Serra in Camara, Wolves.
At that time, 54 militants fought on various active fronts, supported by 18 vehicles and a helicopter from the Regional Civil Protection Service of Madeira, as well as a unit of the PSP and the Institute of Forestry and Nature Conservation.
At around 3:30 p.m., the Regional Civil Protection Secretariat announced in a statement that the region would receive 80 members of the Special Fire Service in the next few hours to help put out the fire.
In a note, the agency said that “resources on the ground have been reinforced and forestry teams attached to the National Republican Guard have been activated,” without specifying the number of resources involved.
