The Superintendence of Food and Economic Security (ASAE) confiscated six tons of live snails during an inspection of a food production facility in the municipality of Sabugal, Guarda district.
In a statement sent to the Lusa agency, ASAE said the action, carried out through the Specialized Brigade for Animal Products of the Central Regional Unit, was directed against an economic operator involved in the production of lunches and prepared foods in the municipality of Sabugal.
The aim of the operation was to verify compliance with legal regulations applicable to this type of activity in the area of food safety and the fight against crimes against public health.
“The action found that live gastropods, commonly known as snails, from a third country were used in the preparation of the dishes without providing any of the mandatory labelling information that ensures that it is safe food for consumers,” ASAE said.
During the operation, 6,510 kilograms of snails worth 13,793 euros were seized and proceedings were initiated for the corresponding administrative offence.
ASAE stressed that snails may only be placed on the market after being packaged/labeled/marked in accordance with the same rules as bivalve molluscs.
