New York Attorney General Letitia James has asked an appeals court to uphold a $454 million civil fraud fine imposed on former President Donald Trump because there is “overwhelming evidence” of his guilt.
The request, filed by Letitia James’s office on Wednesday evening in the New York Court of Appeals, defends a February ruling condemning the former President of the United States (2017-2021), accusing him of inflating the value of his assets – believed to be worth $2.2 billion (€1.982 million) – to obtain preferential loans and other financial benefits.
“Mr. Trump undoubtedly committed fraud,” the prosecutor said in a legal filing Wednesday, arguing that “he, his adult children, and his company (the Trump Organization) engaged in a wide range of deceptive strategies” that ultimately “harmed the marketplace.”
