Portugal’s youngest MEP, Bruno Gonçalves of the Socialist Party (PS), has called Vice President and Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris “the embodiment of the American dream,” predicting that North American youth will help elect her.
In an interview with Lusa on the sidelines of the Democratic National Convention, which ended Thursday in Chicago, Bruno Goncalves emphasized the inspiring role that Kamala Harris can play for millions of North American children and young people.
“Without a doubt, Kamala Harris is the embodiment of the American dream: a black woman who can become president on her own, through her merits, through her work and with the help of many, many young people who believe in her to be president of the United States of America,” said Bruno Goncalves.
In his remarks about the first black president of the United States, the MEP said Barack Obama “was not only a great communicator” but also ultimately became an inspirational figure for several generations who saw in him “a set of aspirations: equality, eternity, solidarity, justice.”
The young PS politician believes that Kamala Harris has brought this feeling back to the population.
“A young person who wants to be in the Democratic Party today feels that from the age of 18 or 20 he can be a candidate, attorney general, mayor and one day become president. This is the American dream embodied in a woman,” he emphasized, emphasizing the “normal path” of this woman “who did not graduate from the best school in the United States” and who managed to be “first” many times throughout her career.
The 27-year-old MEP, who attended the Chicago convention, lamented the “massive divisions in North American politics” but predicted that young people would take to the streets in the November 5 presidential election to campaign “not for this generation to lose the values it has acquired, to lose the freedoms it has won.”
During the Democratic National Convention, which ended Thursday in Chicago, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz announced their candidacies as candidates for president and vice president of the United States in a race in which they will face Republican tycoon Donald Trump after Joe Biden dropped out of the White House race.
Since the event began on Monday, thousands of protesters have gathered several kilometers from the United Center where the convention was held to protest the stance of the Joe Biden and Kamala Harris government to continue funding Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, which has killed more than 40,000 people.
Several protesters told Lusa in Chicago that they would not vote for Kamala Harris because of her continued support for Tel Aviv, believing the current vice president holds the same position as Biden.
This discontent became evident after the primary elections earlier this year, when thousands of Democrats decided to vote blank in protest at the current Democratic government’s support for Israel.
According to Bruno Gonçalves, the Democratic Party must find a “golden mean” in its speech and “cannot continue to support an endless war, a war against innocent people.”
