This Sunday, a 30-year-old pregnant woman went to the Santo André Hospital in Leiria complaining of vomiting, pain and high blood pressure. At the hospital, which is part of a group of health facilities that closed the obstetric and pediatric emergencies this weekend, the woman found a closed door and a quiet facility. After being asked to contact Saúde 24, she was taken to the University of Coimbra Hospital in the Ortigosa volunteer ambulance. “We live in England and came to Portugal for the holidays. Nothing like this had happened to our children there,” said Wilson Fernandes, the user’s husband. The pediatric and obstetric emergencies at the Santo André Hospital are expected to reopen on Monday morning.
