Presidential candidate Ossufo Momade is not participating in the campaign for Mozambique’s general elections, which began on Saturday, because, according to his Renamo party, the main force in Mozambique’s opposition, “he is abroad on a working mission.”
The campaign for the October 9 general election marks its fourth day on Tuesday, and National Resistance of Mozambique (Renamo) leader Ossufo Momade, a presidential candidate, has yet to appear publicly at party events.
“Our presidential candidate and leader is in a foreign country on a mission,” Marciano Macome, a spokesman for the main opposition party, told Luse, declining to specify the country he was in.
“General Ossoufou Momade will join the country’s election campaign this week,” a Renamo spokesman said.
A source in the administration of public channel Rádio Moçambique told Lusa on Tuesday that the main opposition party sent recorded messages to Ossufo Momade calling on people to vote for him as a presidential candidate and for the party in legislative and provincial elections.
“Renamo uses the airtime that is allocated to it by law,” the source said.
The pre-election activities of the main opposition political force were led by high-ranking members of the organization in the absence of its leader.
In addition to Ossufo Momade – the only repeater among the candidates for the presidency of the republic – Daniel Chapo, supported by the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo, the party in power), Lutero Simango, supported by the Democratic Movement of Mozambique Mozambique (MDM, the third largest parliamentary force) and Venancio Mondlane, supported by the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos), made up of Frelimo dissidents, and the Democratic Revolution (formed by former members of Renamo), both without parliamentary representation.
The presidential election will be held simultaneously with legislative, gubernatorial and provincial assembly elections on October 9.
According to official data, more than 17 million voters are registered to vote, including 333,839 registered abroad.
