Last September, a seven-year-old Chilean girl was diagnosed with breast cancer. Maura’s case attracted the attention of the medical community around the world because of its rarity, according to EFE.
It all started with the fact that the mother found a small bump in the child’s left chest. “I was applying cream on her when I noticed a small bump under the nipple,” says Patricia Munoz.
The mother explains that it took about five months for the test results to come in, which caused the tumor to get bigger. “The nipple grew a lot and turned purple,” he said.
“Cases of breast cancer in children under 14 are very rare. We are talking about an indicator of 0.0001%. [Trata-se] a unique case in the world,” said Mario Pardo, a doctor at the Clinical Hospital of the University of Chile.
the girl went recently had a mastectomy complete breast removal surgery. Patricia Munoz is currently worried that the other breast will be affected. “Now she still doesn’t understand what is happening because she is a child. The only thing she said is that she doesn’t want to go bald. My biggest fear is not knowing how to explain what happened,” the mother says.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women worldwide, and it mostly affects women over 50 years of age.
