The body of Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu, found under the rubble of his house in Hatay, Turkey, will be repatriated this Sunday to Ghana, the country’s foreign ministry said.
“The remains will accompany the family and the Ghanaian Ambassador to Turkey on a flight that will arrive in Accra at 7:40 pm,” the ministry said in a statement.
Atsu, 31, was found dead Saturday under the rubble of his home in Hatay, southern Turkey, following the February 6 earthquake that also affected Syria.
According to Turkish media, a player who played for Hatayspor, which also plays the Portuguese Ruben Ribeiro, was under the rubble of his residence in Ronesans, a 12-story tower that collapsed as a result of an earthquake.
The Ghanaian national team striker represented Porto from 2009 to 2013, and between them was loaned to Rio Ave (2011/12), and later played for Vitesse (Netherlands), Everton, Bournemouth (both from England), Malaga (Spain), Newcastle. (England), Al-Raed (Saudi Arabia) and Hatayspor (Turkey).
Atsu joined Turkish club Hatayspor in September, based in the province of Hatay (south), near the epicenter of the strong earthquake that struck Turkey on February 6.
The quake, followed by strong aftershocks, has killed more than 40,000 people in Turkey and Syria, and left thousands injured and homeless in the cold, according to the latest official reports released on Friday.
