The Brazilian government has ordered the Federal Police to launch a new investigation into the death of activist and adviser Mariel Franco in order to increase cooperation between agencies and identify the criminal organization behind the murder.
Brazilian Justice Minister Flavio Dino said this Wednesday that the government is doing everything it can to help clarify the facts, as promised by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who questioned the possibility of a relationship between the perpetrator and former President Jair Bolsonaro during his election campaign.
Police Chief Guillermo de Paula Machado will be in charge of the investigation. The goal is to reinforce the work that Rio de Janeiro’s public ministry is doing after years of victims’ representatives denouncing maneuvers to obstruct the case.
