The National Republican Guard (GNR) participated on Tuesday and Wednesday in an operation led by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) in Porto, which put an end to the activities of an international criminal network that used a fraudulent scheme to sell electronic equipment worth more than 25 million euros.
According to the GNR statement, the operation, called “Marengo Rosso,” was aimed at putting an end to an organized international network that was engaged in “obtaining illegal property advantages through a fraudulent scheme based on fictitious billing schemes and business simulation carried out in VAT evasion and fraud in the sale of electronic equipment.
In Portugal, six searches were carried out in homes, cars, various company premises, accounting offices and various locations in the Porto area. Following these steps, the guards seized “various documentation” and computer equipment, five cars and 3,200 euros.
As part of the operations carried out in Portugal, the defendants involved two people aged 46 and 42 years. The company, operating in the country, was charged with the practice of “combining the crimes of qualified tax fraud, criminal conspiracy and money laundering.”
This operation was carried out simultaneously in several member states of the European Union (Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Poland, Slovakia and Spain) and 34 guard soldiers belonging to the Financial Action Unit and the territorial commands of Porto and Coimbra.
