A former employee of the Mandarim bar in Coimbra, who was charged with attempted murder, was sentenced this Monday to nine years in prison, under which his son will also have to serve three years.
The former member of the Mandarim Bar Association was charged with the crime of qualified murder of attempt, two crimes of qualified assault on physical integrity and possession of a prohibited weapon, committed as early as dawn on February 19, 2022.
The trial also accused his son, 18, and his friend, 22, who allegedly started a rift with two men in the area of Republic Square, where the Mandarim bar, closed by the Interior Ministry, operates. Administration since November last year.
During the reading of the verdict, which took place this morning, the Court of Coimbra decided to convict the 34-year-old man for the crime of qualified murder in the form of attempt (seven years and six months in prison) and for the crime of violating qualified physical integrity (three years and six months in prison) serving an effective prison sentence, legally speaking, for nine years.
The defendant was acquitted of one of the offenses against bodily integrity of which he was charged “because it is considered to be in clear combination with the offense of qualified murder in the form of attempt” for which he was convicted.
According to the Court of Coimbra, “because it has not been proven that he used brass knuckles”, he was also acquitted of the offense of possession of a prohibited weapon.
A former member of the Mandarim Bar Association with previous convictions, including for crimes of attempted murder and drug trafficking, attended the sentencing by videoconference and is currently serving a legally enforceable term of imprisonment by order another process.
On the other hand, the 18-year-old son personally heard how the court of Coimbra sentenced him to an effective prison term of three years for a crime against qualified physical integrity, since he already had a suspended sentence, for the crimes of kidnapping and coercion, at the time of the facts.
The case also featured as defendant a friend of the son of a former Mandarin employee who was sentenced by law to three and a half years in prison for two crimes against physical integrity.
“The sentence will be suspended for five years for lack of a criminal record,” said the Coimbra court, which also took into account the fact that the defendant is 22 years old.
