A Portuguese man was arrested on suspicion of human trafficking during an operation by the Spanish Civil Guard in Salamanca, in cooperation with the Judicial Police (PJ) of Portugal. During the operation, nine victims of sexual exploitation were released.
During searches in the house of the detainee, in the city of In Fuentes de Onoro, the military found a bar in the basement and a tunnel about 60 meters deep that led to a nearby property, built to make it easier for potential customers to access the establishment and avoid suspicion from the authorities.
On Spanish radio CadenaSER, the Portuguese is part of an organized international human trafficking ring and the operation was to lure women in South America with false promises of jobs in Spain. The criminal group paid the women all their travel expenses, and when they arrived in Spanish territory, they were told that they were indebted to the organization in order to become addicted. The victims lived under the constant supervision of members of the organization who accompanied them, even when they went shopping.
