A head-on collision between a passenger and freight train in Greece killed at least 38 people and injured dozens. The death toll may have increased significantly as the carriage caught fire, charring an undetermined number of passengers.
The fire chief explained that the temperature inside was such that it was impossible to count the bodies.
Between 50 and 60 passengers were reported missing after a collision near the city of Tempe just before midnight on Tuesday, according to local media. Of the more than 70 hospitalized, 15 have been discharged, but another six were in critical condition in intensive care this Wednesday.
The station chief was detained as part of an investigation into the cause of the tragedy, which Prime Minister Kyriakis Mitsotakis said was caused by “tragic human error.” Transport Minister Kostas Karamanlis resigned, saying it was “the least he can do in memory of the victims” and lamenting the state’s repeated “failures”.
