The PSP and Judicial Police are investigating the death of a newborn after the mother was admitted to a hospital in Vila Franca de Xira with signs of childbirth but no baby.
The 18-year-old was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday afternoon due to heavy bleeding after her mother found her at home bleeding profusely, according to KM. The young woman claimed that it was menstruation. But the doctor treating her suspected something was wrong and called the PSP officers on duty to the scene. Everything indicated that the young woman was pregnant and went into labor or had an abortion, but there was no newborn.
The police then went to the young mother’s home, where they found a lifeless fetus in a plastic bag. The young woman, who has been a mother for just over a year and a half, claimed to have felt the baby’s head come out and fall into the tub while she was taking a bath. He says he tried to perform resuscitation maneuvers, but ended up losing consciousness. He then put the body in a bag and left it in the room, losing consciousness again. It was the girl’s mother who, having arrived home, found her bleeding and took her to the hospital.
INEM was called to help the child, but there was nothing to be done. The body has been taken for an autopsy, which will determine whether the child was stillborn or whether the young woman committed the crime of infanticide.
