A court in the Kemerovo region (Western Siberia) this Friday sentenced a journalist accused of disseminating knowingly false information about the Russian Armed Forces to eight months of community service in the first sentence under this article of the Criminal Code.
The verdict was imposed on journalist Andrei Novashov, and, according to the newspaper Tayga.info, Olga Luchankina, judge of the Rudnichnitsky District Court, also banned him from engaging in activities for one year.
The defense said it would appeal the verdict.
The prosecution asked for 11 months of social work and two years of an Internet ban.
Novashov, who collaborated with Taiga.info and Sibir.Realii and was declared a “foreign agent” by the Russian Ministry of Justice, was accused of publishing “false” information for publishing an article by another person about the city of Mariupol, east of Ukraine, and four publications on VKontakte. According to Taiga.info, the journalist denied the accusations and, before sentencing, remembered the repressive laws and told how he was suspended from work.
