On Wednesday, a Coimbra court begins trying a 71-year-old man accused of domestic violence and attempting to kill his wife in July 2022 with a machete in Arganil.
The man in custody has been married for 46 years and his wife is said to have been the victim of aggression such as slapping and hair pulling, according to the indictment, which Lusa had access to.
The couple, who lived in an isolated house in an area with few residents, had an argument on the night of July 14, 2022, when the woman decided to run away from home and seek refuge in the house of some neighbors.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the accused came to this house with a machete in his hands with the intention to kill the woman.
Neighbors, two men, tried to snatch the machete from the hands of the defendant, both received cuts on their hands, the indictment says.
Prosecutors believe the only reason the defendant didn’t kill his wife is due to the neighbors’ actions, noting that throughout the relationship the man tried to control who his wife talked to, spat in her face and called her name.
According to the prosecution, 20 years before the attempted murder, the accused put a razor to the woman’s neck and said: “If your life was worth as much as the life of a chicken, it would not exist.”
The defendant is charged with the offense of domestic violence, the offense of qualified attempted murder, the offense of possession of a prohibited weapon, and two offenses of qualified assault on physical integrity.
The trial begins at 9:30 am on Wednesday.
