An investigation by Polish private television channel TVN on Sunday revealed that Karol Wojtyla, as a cardinal and bishop of Krakow, was aware of cases of pedophilia committed by priests in his diocese, to whom he handed over parishes to avoid scandals. Before becoming pope (John Paul II), Wojtyła sent a suspicious priest to Austria by writing a letter of recommendation to Cardinal Franz König of Vienna without informing him of the accusations against the priest.
During the investigation, journalist Michal Gutowski met with victims of pedophile priests and former diocese officials. One of the witnesses testified that he informed Cardinal Wojtyla about the abuse by the priest. Gutowski also cites documents held by the former communist secret police and the church.
