The executive director of the National Health Service, Fernando Araujo, on Tuesday ensured that a strategy to reorganize the network of emergency care in urology, gastroenterology and pediatrics at Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (LVT) hospitals will be presented this week.
After various meetings held on Tuesday with more than 100 LVT specialists and hospital leaders, Fernando Araujo emphasized the openness of medical professionals and the “great agreement” of the positions expressed regarding the reorganization of these specialties.
The National Health Service (DE-SNS) executive board said in a statement that the reorganization of emergency care across these three specialties is the result of “long weeks of working with professionals from various institutions” and aims to “ensure the proximity and access of the population to the National Health Service ( NSZ)”
The body, headed by Fernando Araujo, met with Lisbon and Vale do Tejo hospitals, INEM, the Regional Directorate of Health, the Executive Committee of the Metropolitan Emergencies and the Technical Operations Unit of the Pediatric Emergency Medical Service, to finalize emergency planning for the hospital network. specialties in urology, gastroenterology and pediatrics in the region.
“Strengthening the network between hospitals and primary care teams with INEM and Linha de Saúde 24, and timely planning is an appropriate strategy to ensure a culture of predictability, safety and trust for users and healthcare professionals,” the executive guidance says. .
According to the statement, the final plan for the reorganization of SNS responses will now be “finalized by DE-SNS with the necessary calm, attention and dialogue”, arguing that these are “complex issues that deeply affect people’s lives.”
The meetings came about a week after the pediatric emergency department at Loures Hospital was closed overnight, on holidays and weekends, due to a shortage of specialists.
During these periods, the emergency departments of the Santa Maria, Dona Estefania and San Francisco Javier hospitals treated children from the control area of Loures Hospital, which serves about 278,000 people.
According to the Beatriz Angelo Hospital, this partial closure of the pediatric emergency room is a “temporary solution” that has been agreed with DE-SNS and ARSLVT and is “due to difficulties filling the scales” by the medical teams.
