The president of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), an opposition party, this Wednesday defended the establishment of an audit chamber in the country as a way to fight corruption.
“We will insist that the public authorities urgently establish an audit chamber,” said Lutero Simango in his opening speech at a meeting of the National Political Commission in the city of Beira.
Shimango defends the creation of a court, similar to those in other countries, to control public spending as another tool to fight “widespread corruption” in the country.
“Corruption cannot be fought only with speeches, the fight is fought with concrete actions, and one of such actions is the creation of the Accounts Chamber,” since the actions of the Administrative Court are not enough, he stressed.
He stressed that in addition to focusing on corruption, Simango deplored cases of kidnapping of businessmen and their families, which continue to spread fear in society and hinder investment in Mozambique.
At the political level, the MDM leader denounced situations of political intolerance towards his fighters, blaming local leaders of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) for a repeating scenario, especially in electoral cycles.
“Over the past three days, our members have been victims of persecution during party activities led by the Frelimo party in Tete and Manica,” two other provinces in the center of the country, Lutero Simango said, without specifying, calling for it. such cases are reported to the police.
The three-day meeting of the MDM is aimed at discussing the party’s internal position in connection with the municipal elections in October – with the party leading a single municipality, Beira, the provincial capital of Sofala and one of the main urban centers. in the country.
At the meeting, the third party, which has parliamentary representation in Mozambique, is expected to discuss campaign strategy and strengthen the central electoral commission.
“The people of Mozambique are in need of democratic change and we, as MDM, are ready to take on this responsibility,” he concluded.
Mozambique is entering a new electoral cycle this year with municipal elections scheduled for October and general elections (presidential, legislative and provincial, with the first district elections still open) in 2024.
