An American woman’s nose was blown off by her boyfriend’s dog, a pit bull, after the animal freaked out after seeing her use an LED-lit plate to ‘whiten her teeth’.
Olivia Quast, 30, used a plate when she went to feed her dog on Feb. 3. The woman believes that the light could have frightened the animal that attacked her, first on her nose and then on her arm.
Olivia told the site Kennedy News and Mediathat when the dog bit off his nose he was “in shock”. “I looked at him. I didn’t understand why he attacked me. I put my hand on my nose and he grabbed my hand.”
The woman was taken to the hospital, and doctors discovered that her nasal septum and cartilage had been torn out.
Fortunately, the bridge of the nose and nostrils remained intact, so that breathing and smell were not affected.
Injuries to the hand required two plates, eight screws and two pins to hold the limb together. Olivia also suffered nerve and ligament damage that doctors say will take a year to recover. The woman will also have to wait a year for her facial injuries to heal before undergoing reconstructive surgery.
After the attack, Olivia and her boyfriend decided to euthanize the dog.
