Russia’s “massive attacks” this Thursday in Ukraine resulted in power, heating and water outages in some regions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed the importance of international assistance for air defense.
“Repair crews, power engineers, local governments, central authorities – everyone will work as long as it takes to restore power supply to cities and regions where there are problems now. Thanks to everyone who works for this,” Zelensky emphasized in his usual daily evening speech posted on social networks.
The head of the Ukrainian state said that the most difficult situations occurred in Kharkiv, Zhytomyr region, Odessa, Dnepropetrovsk region, Kyiv and Zaporozhye.
He emphasized that in these regions, Russian attacks led to temporary power outages, heating and water.
“We have already shown what Ukraine is capable of. And no matter how bad Russia does, our state and people are still not in chains. Neither missiles nor Russian atrocities will help in this,” he assured.
Zelensky also thanked “everyone in the world who realizes how important it is to give full protection to the Ukrainian sky”, pointing out that this is a way to “ensure a normal life for people.”
On Thursday, Russia admitted it carried out “massive attacks” on Ukraine in response to a recent incursion into its territory that it blames on “saboteurs” from Kyiv.
“In response to the terrorist attacks of the Kyiv regime in the region [russa] Under the British on March 2, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched massive retaliatory strikes, ”the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
According to the ministry, the strikes were carried out mainly by supersonic Kindzhal (Dagger in Russian) missiles.
The missiles were first used by the Russian army last year and are highly maneuverable and capable of challenging air defense systems, Moscow said. This is the first hypersonic weapon to be used in conflicts.
Russian attacks, the largest in recent weeks, have killed at least six people and cut off electricity to part of the population and the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant.
According to the Ukrainian army, air defense systems destroyed 34 of the 81 missiles launched by Moscow and four Iranian-made drones.
Since October, Russia has been regularly bombing Ukraine’s main energy facilities with missiles and drones, which is why millions of people live without electricity and heat.
The Russian military offensive into Ukraine, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
The Russian invasion — justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security — was condemned by the international community at large, which responded by sending military aid to Kiev and imposing political and economic sanctions against Moscow.
