Last Thursday, the Archbishop of Braga decided to remove Father Albino Fernández Meireles from the parish, whose name was on the list compiled by the Independent Commission.
The 44-year-old priest has been the parish priest of Calvos y Cercedo in the municipality of Guimarães since 2018, and the news was not believed by the faithful.
“I hope he doesn’t do anything wrong,” he said morning Post Mary Adelia, who was with the cleric when he received the notification from the archdiocese. Concerned about the future of the priest, whom she considers innocent, Maria Adelia assures that “all this was invented by people who really wanted him.”
José María Silva, who couldn’t even sleep when he learned of the parish priest’s suspension, says nothing on earth has ever been heard that has anything to do with child abuse. “He yesterday [sexta-feira] even cried. He was greatly appreciated, and even parents from other parishes sent their children here for catechesis, because they liked him,” José Maria assures.
The list of the Archdiocese of Braga contained eight names. Three have already died, one was tried and acquitted 20 years ago, the other has already been removed, and two, a priest and a layman, have not been identified.
