Mozambican police detained two men and seized 262 explosives and 150 detonators that were supposed to be used in illegal mining, the Lusa corporation said on Wednesday.
The two detainees, a Mozambican and a Zimbabwean, were smuggled with materials from Zimbabwe, which were seized on Monday in the downtown suburb of Chimoyo.
The material will be used in illegal gold mines in Chitima, Manica provincial police spokesman Mario Arnasa told Lusa.
“Persons will be held accountable for possession of prohibited weapons, for the importation of explosives into the country,” said Mario Arnasa.
The possibility that the materials were intended for armed groups operating in Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique is also being explored.
He added that on Tuesday the criminal case was sent to Chimoyo’s Ministry of Public Affairs for trial.
