The popular complaint prompted the GNR military to stop the illegal dumping of livestock waste and expose the exploitation in question in the parish of Ortigosa in the municipality of Leiria, which police announced on Tuesday.
Leiria’s GNR Territorial Command, through Leiria’s Environmental Protection Core (NPA), discovered the illegal dumping of livestock waste on March 9, citing a press release sent on Tuesday adding that in a popular complaint, NPA elements confirmed the dumping of livestock wastewater into the soil without any cleaning treatment.
This discharge “from the livestock farm” was carried out “with the help of a submersible pump inserted inside a watertight cesspool to receive effluent from industrial centers.”
“Thanks to the prompt intervention of this security guard, the discharged effluents did not reach the adjacent water conduits, since upon arrival at the scene, the offense was stopped by turning off the power to the submersible pump,” the report says.
This action led to the discovery of the exploitation of livestock with the preparation of an administrative offense sent to the Portuguese Environmental Protection Agency, punishable by a fine of up to 144 thousand euros.
The National Republican Guard, through the Nature and Environment Service (SEPNA), is committed to protecting the environment and animals on a daily basis.
