The current rainy season, which began in October, has already killed 198 people in Mozambique, President Filipe Nyusi said today in an Address to the Nation.
A quarter of the deaths (53) occurred last week, from March 7 to 13, during the second passage of Cyclone Freddy through the country, in particular as a result of the provincial capital of Quelimane and the province of Zambezia.
The head of state spoke after visiting the region and announced the creation of a new scientific and technical commission.
It will be “an advisory body on issues related to climate change, including extreme events, cause and effect analysis,” he explained.
Filipe Nyusi hopes the panel of experts will recommend to the government “prevention, mitigation and adaptation solutions” to extreme weather events.
For now, in the area affected by Cyclone Freddy, the priority is to support the 253,000 people affected, including displaced and otherwise affected people, and reopen schools and other essential services.
