The 22-year-old girl was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison on charges of fabricated rape and human trafficking by a group of Asian men, as well as several false accusations of raping other men. Eleanor Williams was convicted by a British court judge who dismissed the allegations as “pure fabrication”.
A young woman went viral online during the Covid-19 pandemic after she posted photos on Facebook in May 2020 in which she appeared with bruises, a black eye and a partially cut finger, alleging she was beaten and coerced to participating in “sex parties” by “bad but smart” Asian men, mostly Pakistani establishment owners, in the Cumbria region of the UK.
In accordance with guardian, the accusations spread far beyond Cumbria and sparked a global solidarity campaign called “Justice for Ellie” with a Facebook page of over 100,000 members. The campaign resulted in its own line of merchandise featuring the purple elephant symbol and sparked rallies across the UK with allegations of a cover-up by the police.
In 2020, the Cumbrian police recorded 151 crimes related to the case, including harassment, criminal acts and disorderly conduct. Hate crimes against the Asian community tripled this summer in the region.
Among the young woman’s false accusations are those of rape of three young white men, one of whom is Oliver Gardner, who only once crossed paths with a young woman on the street to ask her for a lighter. Jordan Trengov spent 73 days in remand after Eleanor accused him of raping and drugging her with a knife.
But the most serious allegations have been against businessman Mohammed Ramzan, known locally as Mo Rammy, now 43. A young woman accused a man of being the head of an international human trafficking gang and of forcing her into sexual reactions when she was only 12 and 13 years old, accusing him of having trafficked her along with dozens of other girls from the North West of England and abroad.
