20 GNR soldiers from the crew of the speedboat Bojador will go on Wednesday in Crotone, Italy, on a coastal patrol to control illegal immigration and border surveillance as part of the Frontex mission, the corporation said on Monday.
The National Republican Guard said in a statement that 20 soldiers from the Coastal and Border Control Unit (UCCF), who make up the crew of the coastal patrol boat Bojador, arrived this Monday at the port of Crotone, where they are part of the European Border and Border Protection Agency’s joint operation THEMIS 2023. Coast Guard (Frontex) in the framework of operational coordination at the external borders of the European Union to control migration flows and prevent cross-border crime.
The GNR states that the main purpose of this mission is to act in the framework of “border surveillance, control illegal immigration flows, fight cross-border crime and strengthen European cooperation at the level of the coast guard and law enforcement.”
According to the security forces, the purpose of the mission is “prevention, detection and suppression of illegal activities related to drug trafficking, human trafficking, arms trafficking, illegal fishing, falsification of documents, identification and registration of people, identification of intermediaries, collection of information about criminal networks, search and rescue operations and the fight against marine pollution, and contributes to the protection of human life at sea.”
